The 2025 BAFTA Film Awards brought well-deserved recognition to The Brutalist, a film that not only captivated audiences worldwide but also holds a special place in Hungary’s film industry. We are immensely proud of the incredible work done by the talented Hungarian crew who helped bring this extraordinary film to life.
Filming for The Brutalist took place over 34 days between March 16 and May 5, 2023, with principal photography spanning Budapest, Hungary, and Carrara, Italy. Despite the project’s initial announcement in 2020 with a different cast, production faced multiple delays due to the COVID-19 pandemic, leading to a major recasting in 2023. Nevertheless, the film’s creative vision remained steadfast, culminating in a cinematic masterpiece that is now receiving prestigious accolades.
Hungary played a crucial role in the making of The Brutalist, at least 73 Hungarian crew members contributing across key departments, including cinematography, editing, production management, art direction, sound design, stunts, and camera operations. Their expertise helped shape the film’s striking visual and technical achievements, proving once again that Budapest is a prime destination for world-class film production.
One of the most remarkable aspects of The Brutalist is its use of VistaVision, a widescreen format that runs 35mm film horizontally to achieve unparalleled resolution and depth. The film was then released on 70mm prints, marking the first American film in 61 years to be entirely shot in this historic format. Director Brady Corbet’s decision to utilize VistaVision was a tribute to the aesthetic and engineering techniques of the 1950s, reinforcing the film’s period authenticity.
The industry-wide recognition for The Brutalist at the BAFTAs—winning Best Director (Brady Corbet), Best Leading Actor (Adrien Brody), Best Cinematography, and Best Original Score—is a testament to the outstanding collaborative effort behind this production. We extend our warmest congratulations to the entire cast and crew, especially our Hungarian colleagues whose dedication and craftsmanship continue to elevate the global reputation of Budapest as a filmmaking hub.
